Expanded Wheelchair Fleet and Equipment Loans now Supporting Families
We're delighted to share that, thanks to funding from the Liquor Industry Golf Day and Wish 4 Kids, we have successfully expanded our equipment loan service to better support families facing childhood cancer.
Children undergoing cancer treatment often face physical challenges that impact their daily lives and recovery. While medical care is essential, families also need practical support to navigate day-to-day challenges—everything from mobility aids to exercise equipment for rehabilitation.
With this funding, we replaced older wheelchairs in our fleet and broadened our range of loan equipment. Families now have free access to essential items such as:
- Wheelchairs and walkers for children who need mobility support due to treatment side effects
- Shower, bath and toileting aids to make daily care easier
- Static pedals to support exercise and rehabilitation at home
This expansion was guided by consultations with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital physiotherapy and occupational therapy, as well as feedback from families.
Impact for families
The extended service has enabled children to be discharged from hospital more quickly, returning to the comfort of home and family support. Exercise equipment allowed children to stay safely active, improving both physical and mental wellbeing during and after treatment.
Providing these essential items free of charge has also reduced the financial burden on families, many of whom have one or both parents taking time away from work to care for their child.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Liquor Industry Golf Day and Wish 4 Kids for making this expansion possible. Their support has enabled us to continue providing accessible, practical, and professional support to children with cancer and their families when they need it most.
