Recognising our Volunteers

Govt House Volunteers 800X550

Wednesday 4 Sept, 2019

On Monday, 2 September, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, launched global Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a thank you reception at Government House for our supporters and partners.

During the reception a number of volunteers were recognised for their outstanding contribution over many years, making a real difference in the lives of children with cancer and their families.

Glen Uren, Volunteer - 10 Years (2009-2019)

Glen has been an important team member at the Childhood Cancer Association office once a week for the past ten years. She is often the first point of contact for families and visitors when they arrive at reception or when they telephone for support. Glen is also of great assistance with any administrative tasks that need to be undertaken that week. She has also assisted with providing child minding services whilst a child is in the office, to enable a family member to access services.

Tony Lauterio, Volunteer - 10 Years (2009-2019)

Volunteering for the Association for 10 years, Tony has been the Property Maintenance person at our accommodation units in Prospect which is provided to country and interstate families free of charge for as long as their child is receiving treatment. Tony has been an absolute asset by supporting these families with any handyman jobs or assistance required on-site. He has also previously assisted with child minding children with cancer whilst they were in hospital, providing volunteer support at our Bereaved Grandparents group and Bereaved Families Day, assisting with special projects and fundraising. He has also developed model MRI and radiotherapy machines for use by staff in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. These machines have been used to prepare children prior to undergoing radiotherapy or an MRI, in order to try and decrease the level of anxiety experienced by the children.

Kim & Ben Mead, Unite 4 Kids Gala Fundraiser - 5 Years (2015-2019)

After having their daughter diagnosed with cancer at the age of six, Kim & Ben Mead were passionate about giving back to the charities that have supported their family during this difficult time. Working with the Advertiser Foundation, the couple developed the annual gala fundraising luncheon “Unite 4 Kids” – a hugely successful event which sells out every year by offering world-class entertainment and the finest food and wine. Each year, this event continues to grow from strength to strength and has raised $650,000 for the charities it has supported over the past five years.

Anthony & Julie Gosti - Yellow Strawberry Hair & Beauty - 30+ years (1989 – 2019)

30 years ago, Anthony & Julie Gosti’s salon in North Adelaide, Yellow Strawberry, began providing complimentary haircuts to children with cancer in the Women’s & Children’s Hospital. Anthony & Julie are proud of the difference they have been able to make in the lives of children with cancer. After relocating to its sister salon in West Lakes this year, they are continuing with this essential service.
