A Community United in Honour of Charlie

For almost six years, the Yorke Peninsula community has continued to come together in an extraordinary show of generosity and community spirit – all in memory of one young man, Charlie Hoile.

Since 2020, Charlie’s mum, Megan Hoile, along with her family and close friends, has led an incredible fundraising journey for the Childhood Cancer Association, raising almost $245,000 in Charlie’s memory.

What began as a way to honour Charlie has grown into a remarkable community movement, with people across the Yorke Peninsula continuing to find new and creative ways to raise funds and support children with cancer, and their families.

From bake sales and raffles to race days, footy fundraisers, merchandise sales, market stalls and succulent sales, there has been no shortage of ways for the community to get involved.

Among the highlights have been The Charlie Hoile Cup, a much-loved horse racing event held in Charlie’s honour, and Charlie Hoile Day, which brings the local football community together while celebrating Charlie’s life and raising vital funds.

Every event, big or small, has played a part.

Every cake baked, raffle ticket sold, item purchased, donation made and kilometre travelled has helped turn Charlie’s memory into meaningful support for families facing childhood cancer.

Childhood Cancer Association Chief Executive, Cath O’Loughlin, said Megan’s dedication and the support of her community had been truly extraordinary.

“I would like to acknowledge Charlie’s mum, Megan, whose strength, determination and generosity have inspired so many people. Megan has led an extraordinary fundraising journey, supported every step of the way by her family and friends, demonstrating what can be achieved when people come together for a cause close to their hearts.”

“The Yorke Peninsula community has rallied behind our cause and demonstrated the extraordinary power of community,” Cath said.

Their commitment has continued to grow beyond the Yorke Peninsula too. Earlier this year, Megan and her friends, Abbie and Angie, took on an incredible challenge of their own, walking 312 kilometres along the Camino de Santiago in Spain as the 3 Chicks in Spain, raising funds in Charlie’s memory along the way.

Raising almost a quarter of a million dollars is an incredible achievement. But behind that remarkable number are hundreds of families who have been able to access practical and professional support from the Childhood Cancer Association when they have needed it most.

“Over the past six years, Megan, her family and friends have raised close to $245,000 in Charlie’s memory,” Cath said.

“While that is an extraordinary achievement, the true impact is measured not in dollars, but in the hundreds of families who have received practical and professional support during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Six years on, Charlie’s name continues to bring people together.

Thank you, Megan, Abbie, Angie, Jackie and their families, as well as the entire Yorke Peninsula community, for honouring Charlie’s legacy and making an incredible difference.
