At the Childhood Cancer Association, we know the impact of childhood cancer goes far beyond the child receiving treatment—it affects the whole family. That’s why we offer critical care services for the whole family, even siblings like Sami, who share in the journey in their own deeply personal ways.
Sami was just eight years old when her little sister Becky was diagnosed with cancer. “It didn’t feel real,” she told us. “Suddenly my little sister and best friend was absent. I didn’t understand what was happening to her and I felt confused and alone.” Her world shifted, and with it came anxiety, separation fears, and emotional struggles that lasted long after Becky's treatment began.
During this time, Sami found vital support at the Childhood Cancer Association. “I would often call into the Childhood Cancer office next to the hospital to discuss how I was coping with all the changes in my life. My counsellor Chris always made time for me,” she said.
Through our sibling support program and one-on-one play therapy sessions, Sami gained tools to process what she was going through. “They helped me understand what Becky was facing, and what my mum, my family, and I were going through as well,” she shared.
A comfort during those challenging days was our mascot, Elliot. Both Sami and Becky had an Elliot toy dog. “Becky and I were able to hold onto him and know whilst I was getting into bed cuddling my Elliot from home, Becky would be cuddling her Elliot in hospital,” said Sami.
Now 10 years in remission, Becky and Sami take part in the City-Bay Fun Run to raise awareness and funds for the Childhood Cancer Association.
“Every step I take at the City-Bay is a step closer to helping other families cope with childhood cancer, emotionally and physically. Fundraising for the Childhood Cancer Association, fills me with hope for other families and gratitude for mine,” Sami said.
Sami has participated in the run four times and says her favourite moment each year is finishing the walk, visiting the Childhood Cancer Association tent and reconnecting with those who supported her.
To Sami, fundraising is personal: “Being able to support the Childhood Cancer Association and doing the City-Bay Fun Run as sisters and for Team Becky means everything to me.”
Join Sami and Team Becky this year and help make a difference. Every step counts.
