Creating Moments of Normality Through Play
For children undergoing cancer treatment, everyday experiences like kindy, playdates, and early learning can quickly disappear. The Childhood Cancer Association Playgroup helps restore these important moments, offering a calm, welcoming space for children aged 1–5 to play, learn, and connect—even when hospital visits, low energy, or a weakened immune system make regular early learning impossible.
During treatment, many children are unable to attend childcare or preschool due to health concerns or frequent hospital appointments. This can be isolating for both children and parents. The Childhood Cancer Association Playgroup, run in partnership with the Hospital School SA, provides a gentle, flexible environment where children can continue learning and interacting with others in ways that suit how they’re feeling on the day.
Since its pilot in 2018, the program has evolved alongside families’ needs. Weekly online sessions allow children to participate from home or hospital, while monthly face-to-face playgroups create opportunities to connect, engage, and learn together. Led by an experienced Early Childhood Educator, sessions include stories, music, movement, and craft activities—supporting literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills, social confidence, and school readiness. Activity packs are also provided so children can take part in hands-on learning wherever they are.

Programs like Playgroup also support parents, offering connection, reassurance, and practical ideas to help nurture their child’s development.
You can help by becoming a Childhood Champion with a monthly donation to ensure children continue playing, learning, and growing, even during their toughest times.
