Massage Therapy

Oncology massage is a specialised therapeutic massage appropriate for children undergoing treatment. Prior medical consent is required. 

Massage therapy is also available for the parents/caregivers of children undergoing treatment for cancer.

Specialised oncology massage can safely proceed during chemotherapy cycles, radiotherapy and after surgery, within the constraints of the recommended guidelines. A range of factors are carefully considered before oncology massage therapy is given. After closely reviewing the information supplied in the massage consent form, our trained massage therapists create a massage program that aligns with the child’s preferences and their current health status.

The primary goal of oncology massage is to promote relaxation and comfort without putting further strain on the body.

Potential benefits for children undergoing cancer treatment include:

• reduced pain
• reduced anxiety and stress
• reduced peripheral neuropathy symptoms (such as tingling in hands and feet)
• improved mood
• improved sleep quality

Massage therapy may provide parents and caregivers with:

• an opportunity for self-care and relaxation
• relief from aches and pains associated with the physical demands of caring for a child with cancer
• reduced anxiety and stress
• improved sleep quality

Where is massage therapy located?

All massage sessions are conducted in a private and quiet therapy room at our office. 

What do I wear?

Some people prefer to receive a massage through clothing and that’s perfectly fine! Others choose to wear shorts and a crop top during their session, and some are comfortable in underwear. You can discuss what clothing you feel comfortable in with your massage therapist when you arrive at your appointment.

Are oils used?

While using oil may enhance the massage experience, it is not a requirement. We typically use almond oil or coconut oil. 

Do I have to lie down?

Our massage therapist will discuss the most comfortable positioning options with you. That might be lying on a massage table, side lying with pillow supports, seated, or even in a wheelchair. It’s completely okay to adjust your position during the massage if needed.

How many massages can I have?

Limits apply to the number of sessions that can be accessed. For more information, please speak with the Family Service team.

I am worried about infection, how will this be managed?

Our massage therapist is mindful of the risks of even minor infections and takes measures to minimise risks, including wearing a mask during massage sessions. If you have any particular concerns or questions about infection, you are welcome to contact the Family Service Team.
