Sibling
Support

SIBS is suitable for children aged between 5-12 years, who:

• Have a brother/sister diagnosed with childhood cancer
• Would benefit from assistance to cope with a childhood cancer diagnosis in the family
• Are the siblings of children who have completed their cancer treatment

The SIBS program addresses the needs of siblings of children with cancer.

Run by our Family Service Team, SIBS helps siblings develop effective strategies for adjusting to change. The program offers siblings access to ongoing therapeutic support and encourages peer support amongst children in the group. Sessions cover therapeutic content relevant to siblings in a fun environment, with a range of new activities to try and new skills to develop.

The content in the SIBS program is guided by a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework and explores:

• understanding cancer
• understanding emotions
•  identifying our own strengths and available supports
• developing coping strategies for change
• self care
• improving problem solving skills

SIBS allows children to explore their feelings about having a sibling with cancer while developing a resource journal and a strategy toolkit. Participating in the SIBS program may help children to develop coping strategies and resilience to support them through their family’s cancer experience and beyond.  

The SIBS program follows a different theme each year. Sessions are held at different locations across the Adelaide CBD depending on the theme and activity of the session.

Sessions typically include arts and crafts, sports, games and special activities.

SIBS is a drop-and-go program.Parents do not stay, to allow children to talk openly and share their feelings without reservation.
